Mike Leads All Long Island in Punting

Even though Mike’s primary position is Wide Receiver, he is leading all of Long Island in Punting yards. Here is the list:

  1. Mike Lykos (Hills East)    9    286
  2. Brian McGrath (Carey)    8    268
  3. Adam Goltche (Great Neck North)   3    66

If Football Games Were a 1:36 Shorter, Then the T-Birds Would’ve Had a Win!

That’s right the T-Birds lost another tough one to Newfield this Saturday in the last 1:36. Despite the bad ending, the T-Birds had an awesome start thanks to Mike. He started the game with a 97 yard kick-off return, and was stopped at the Newfield 3 yard line.

Once again Mike was limited on offense by the run heavy play calling, but he truly shined on special teams. He had 157 yards in returns, and punted for 142 yards (avg. 35.5). Mike was also one of the leaders on defense this week with 10.5 tackles and 1 for a loss of 3.

Overall all of the T-Birds looked great on Saturday despite the bad ending. Look for the away game at West Babylon to be more evenly matched for the T-Birds.

Mike and the T-Birds Featured in the Half Hollow Hills Newspaper

Mike and some other players on the T-Birds were mentioned in the Half Hollow Hills Newspaper this past week. The article talks about the T-Birds season so far, the Homecoming game, and previews the game versus Newfield.

Here’s a little peek at what Mike said,

“This year’s team has a lot of heart and has great speed and is quick in the skill positions, added senior Mike Lykos.

‘Our ultimate goal this [season] is to make the playoffs…I believe we can achieve this goal…We need to focus on staying as a team and not fighting within ourselves,’ Lykos said.”

To read more of what Mike said and to read the rest of the article click here to go to the Half Hollow Hills Newspaper website, or you can look in your mailboxes if your in the local area!

Mike Shines on Special Teams Despite Another Hills Loss

Mike had an impresive 142 yards on special teams today, but it didn’t seem to help Hills East as they lost their Homecoming 35-0 to Smithtown East. Mike also punted for a total of 99 yards. He was limited to 3 catches for 47 yards on offense due to the run-heavy play calling. Check out the stats page for complete info.

Look for Mike to have a great game against Newfield next week. The match-up seems to be more favorable between the two Suffolk Div II teams. Here is a link to the game preview by Newsday.

Another Tough Loss For Hills East

The T-Birds kept it close this week against Bellport, but ultimately lost the game 28 – 6. Mike played a great game with deep catches in the first half. However, in the 3rd quarter Mike seemed to hurt his shoulder, he’ll be fine for Hills East’s next game. A Game wrap-up is available on newsday.com, and it is now edited to include Mike on the 55 yard TD at Smithtown West.

Once I have stats avaiable they will posted added to the stats page. For now the pictures page has been updated with pictures from the Bellport game.

Hills East’s next game is Homecoming versus Smithtown East!! Good Luck T-Birds.

Smithtown West defeats Hills East in a Muddy Match-Up

It was good news and bad news for Mike this week as the T-Birds lost their season opener 35 -8 against the Smithtown West Bulls. The down pour of rain forced the T-Birds to change their gameplan to a more run friendly offense. Therefore Mike played every down, but only received the ball once. However, Mike made the most of his one carry and took the ball down the sideline for a 55 yard touchdown! It was Hills East only score of the game.

Mike also made his defense start at Free Safety. He also showed his versilitly by starting Kick Returns and Punt Returns. And do to the punter having a soccer game on the same night as the friday night lights match-up, Mike was also called upon to be the starting Punter!! Yes, he CAN do it all!! :)

Despite losing the game, Mike received some good news this Sunday morning. Newsday named Mike as one of Suffolk County’s Division II Key Players!! Congratulations!!

On Saturday the T-Birds have their home opener against the Bellport Clippers. Good Luck Mike!! :D

UPDATE: click here for the Times of Smithtown’s article about the game. Mike is mentioned towards the bottom.

Scrimmages and Looking to Week 1

For this year’s “preseason” the T-Birds had two scrimmages. Mike played excellent in both! The first scrimmage was at the Jamboree Scrimmage at Jericho High School. In that scrimmage Mike solely played defense. It is not yet known whether Mike will play FS or CB this year, but he will be in either starting position in the secondary. In the second scrimmage Mike played both defense and offense, but was held back a bit on offense due to the harsh weather conditions that day. Some pictures from the Jamboree Scrimmage are now available on the Pictures page.

If the scrimmages are any indication of the 2008 season it is this, Mike Lykos is definitely the main weapon on the Hills East varsity team. He will be starting both offense (WR), defense (CB or FS), and special teams (KR & PR). Mike is looking foward to the season opener versus Smithtown West this Friday Night, Sept. 12th, at 6:00 pm. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTSSSS!!

See you all then!

-Mike’s #1 Fan!! ;)
